Messages send to a distribution group visible in Exchange Online’s Get-MessageTrace as failed – not really failed.

So I noticed today that some messages are getting failed status, I was particulary interested in one message that for sure was a legit one – same as the distribution group it supposed to be delivered to.

FailedMessage

Well..ok, so what happened to it then, I used Get-MessageTraceDetails to check it.

FailedMessage1

I was speechless… so the DL expands and later just drops?

wtf1

So I googled a bit and found these two links to forum threads:

Aparently everyting is just fine, and the “DROP” event means that email has been delivered to all individuals mentioned as recipients in the DL.

So yeah obviously! To ensure the administrator that everything is under control let’s make it visibleas “DROPPED” and “FAILED”.

Microsoft… WHY?
